The "Bird in Hand" saying has been a frequent reminder, in my family, to take what you've got, be grateful, and build with it. When I considered that saying for the subject of my quilt, a vivid picture came to mind of my 4 year old grandson Matt kneeling near his family's henhouse, holding one of his beloved chicks. He was an obliging model, which helped me create the focus for the quilt and, after doing a little research, I found the block "Hen and Chickens" which I included in the perspective surrounding Matt. I took the saying, was grateful for the inspiration, and built my bird-in-hand theme using both a fabric portraiture technique and an adaptation of my researched block "Hen and Chickens."
