Boys Will Be BoysBy Anne Veazie Sonner"Boys Will Be Boys" (or "The Joys and Conflicts of Brothers") is about the relationship between my two sons: Paul, age 6, and Brian, age 4, who are usually best friends and occasionally worst enemies. They are delightful, imaginative, high spirited, sweet little boys who I love dearly. But, as the only female in the household and having had no brothers, I don't think I will ever get used to their rowdiness, noisy outbursts, and especially their sporadic hostility and aggression toward each other. I don't understand why they say and do horrible things to each other, but mothers of sons tell me that, "boys will be boys."

My boys' love for each other is most often expressed in intense games only they understand. They have their own world of play, inhabited by Hawk and White Guy (toys), dinosaurs, planes, aliens, sea creatures, etc. They are interested in similar things and have a great time playing together.
This quilt is a slice of our family life. All the words, including the viscous ones erupting from the volcano, are direct quotes from Brian and Paul. When I told Paul that I was making a quilt about him, Brian, and a volcano, he remarked that, "volcanoes cool the earth down," so I added that statement to the quilt. Sometimes I think I learn more from them than they do from me. |
