Didi Salvatierra

Didi is a professional fiber artist/quiltmaker living and working in Bel Air, Maryland. She studied jewelry design and construction at the University of Colorado, Boulder and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art.

After making jewelry and being a part of cooperative artists’ gallery for eight years, she found fiber arts and quiltmaking to be much more "family friendly" while her children were small.

Since 1990, Didi has maintained a home based Quality Hand Quilting service as well as textile restoration and conservation. Her interest in historical and antique quilts has brought her some very interesting projects. "If these quilts could talk! They make you think about the original maker, her life, environment and personal history. They impart a very powerful sense of tradition and skill."

One-of-a-kind commissions as well as 'memory' quilts are also part of her repertoire. These quilts often include photo-transfer, embellishments, hand quilting, stamping and computer generated images. Visual impact and dynamic colors are often typical in her work. The challenge is to keep the viewer engaged looking at the surface of the piece, examining color, texture and noticing all the details.

Her quilts have won awards on the local, state and national levels. Her fine stitches have been featured in books by Mimi Dietrich and Barbara Brackman. She enjoys exhibiting her work as well as lecturing on quilting and teaching hand quilting classes. She often volunteers in schools to encourage children to learn about quilts and share in their rich history.
