You'll Never See It On A Galloping Horse

By Anne Lehmann Gould

I'm a non-perfectionist who grew up on a ranch with one little sister and six adults, five of whom were perfectionists. I have used "You'll never see it on a galloping horse" to get through my life. I first heard it from my "other" non-perfectionist grandmother. When I was growing up, I believed that when "I grew up" I would be a perfectionist. When I was about thirty years old I realized it was never going to happen.

I chose the saying and I designed a decent horse (I love bays). I decided on the green bottom and the blue top. Then I tried the "you'll never see it" part with the fingertips over the eyes. What the first design said was "See no evil." So I re-designed. The second design said "Peek-a-boo!" The third design said "CBS is off the air." Then I drew the eyes shut, and they worked.

I get commendations for good eye for color and for original design and for good use of quilt space, but like my father, I'm never going to be a perfectionist. You don't have to be perfect to be a musician, a kite flyer, a duplicate bridge player, a good cook, a logician, a teacher, a hiker, a book lover, a baseball fan, an athlete, a weather nut or a quilter!
