What Goes Around Comes Around

By Vicki Tymczyszyn

I chose the title, "What Goes Around Comes Around" or "Be Careful How you Treat People on the Way Up the Ladder, Because You'll Meet the Same People on the Way Back Down", because of my Mom. She always encouraged me to do my best and be my best at everything I tried, and that included treating people 'right'. It would always be a hollow victory for me, she said, if I had hurt people's feelings to obtain my goal. There was a pleasant side effect to this saying. It helped me when someone mistreated me to remember that they would probably get what was coming to them at some future time and it was out of my hands. Interestingly enough, I have had the opportunity to see people caught in their traps of misdeeds at several points in my life.

I've always felt that "you reap what you sow", and have done my best to only sow seeds of kindness. Hey, I'm not perfect, but it's a great rule to live by.

I chose the Mobeus strip to illustrate this point because it is an endless circle. No matter where you start, you'll end up back at the beginning of the strip. The strip is hand appliquéd over a background of Jacob's Ladder blocks, the center blocks being lighter than the bordering blocks. You may notice that a pair of half square triangles in the lower right section of the quilt has been turned - oops! - my "humility block" to keep my place in God's scheme of things. The fabrics are all hand dyed in an 8-step gradation process, purchased a few years back and waiting their turn for just the 'right' project. The quilt has been machine pieced, hand appliquéd and machine quilted with a silver and black metallic thread to give it some sparkle.
