Laughter is the Best MedicineBy Judy Beydler

I chose the proverb "Laughter is the best medicine" as the basis for my quilt. I first saw the entry information for the challenge on the one-year anniversary of my diagnosis with breast cancer and decided it was time to make a quilt. When I had started treatments, a friend advised that I should do positive things, rent funny movies and read uplifting stories. I really think it helped me to get through the surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments with few major side effects. You just have to be able to laugh at yourself when you look in the mirror and see yourself bald. There were no bad hair days for almost nine months. The only side effect that bothered me as a quilter was numbness in my hands. Fortunately that has mostly disappeared.
The doctor in the quilt is based on my husband Calvin. His constant positive support was a great tonic. He didn't know he was the model for the doctor until the quilt was finished. He thought he just posed for the photo so that I could get the jacket right. Our nearest family was halfway across the country, but they called frequently and my twin sister visited as often as she could from Kansas. My quilting friends were so supportive and helpful, especially the ones from my friendship groups. It is really uplifting to get an e-mail, card, or phone call from those far away. |
