Jake Finch

As a writer, I express myself through words. But the written word, an auditory medium of thought, can rudely exclude the visual senses, which brings me to quilting. Through fabric and its sidekicks--embellishments and thread--I can reveal and explain who I am in ways that appeal to viewers, not readers.

I started quilting as an offshoot of sewing. I am self-taught and struggled through many humorous quilting "duhs." I have no one style as I bore easily and move on to new techniques to quell that restlessness. The one consistency in my project choices is my obsession with color. Whether the quilt is destined for a bed or wall, traditional or contemporary, machine or hand quilted, I will spend many obsessive moments focused only on the colors of in my potential fabrics and their interplay within the chosen patterns.

I love quilts. The textures, colors, ability to manipulate the creative flow of energy all appeal to me. And I love words for much the same reason.

As a transplanted native New Yorker, I've lived in Alaska and now California. My range of geographic experience is something I often want to express in fabric and the dichotomy of living in two major urban areas sandwiching my years in Alaska strikes my funny bone often. I have many quilts planned around where I've lived and how nature weaves itself into these settings.

Another subject for my quilts in progress is my roles of wife and mother. The wife role is old and comfortable now with many years under my matrimonial belt. My daughter, however, is only two and I find myself shifting my vision to accommodate hers in a way that inspires delight with everything around me. As a result, my colors are more vibrant and playful and creating quilts with texture and the opportunity to play is now important. What a blessing it is to be able to change my art with my psyche!
