The Pot Calling the Kettle Black

By Susan Callahan

This bit of kitchen wisdom is something we can all relate to, and maybe have even used. When I asked for some help with an idea for the Proverbial Challenge, I immediately visualized "The Pot Calling the Kettle Black."

I saw a cartoon image, something sweet reminding me of the early cartoons of the 50's and 60's. Inspired by the image I decided to work with various fabrics and techniques to create this cartoon. I love creating an image that is immediately recognizable, yet fun.

The Pot Calling the Kettle Black was inspired by my love of being in the kitchen. As a professional chef, I love teaching the culture related to cooking as well as the love for food. I have created many 'culinary' quilts.

Sometimes quilting is the perfect outlet for a chef - quilting is as sensory and satisfying as cooking, yet very low calorie!

I often make food themed quilts, so when the challenge was offered I immediately thought of 'kitchen wisdom'. Things we say all the time that pertain to cooking. Asking friends for suggestions my mother came up with 'The Pot Calling the Kettle Black." I immediately 'saw' it. A cartoon picture of the two talking on a phone, of course the kettle is a little unhappy being called black by her friend.

How often do we say this in conversation, but where did it come from? Who wrote is the original quote? Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quixote. (Part ii. Chap. Xliii) Did you know that? What a great time I had making this quilt.
