Why do I make art? Because I have to. It is no more simple, nor complex, than that. When I don't, I get weird - not a pretty sight (just ask those who love me). I have been on an artistic journey all my life, starting with re-drawing the Sunday funnies as a child to my current experiments with sculpture. I started quilting in 1990. My first few quilts were quite traditional, even a bit "country" colored. Then I saw the Visions art quilt show in San Diego: odd shapes, hand dyed fabrics, paints, embellishments and even photography - and not a calico print in sight. I was inspired and on fire. I have since gone on to make about 200 quilts - large, small, art, traditional and everywhere in between. I have chaired a few quilt shows and presided over my local guild. I teach quilting and fabric dyeing. I have been accepted to national and international shows, had my work published in magazines and calendars, designed and published patterns, sold my work in galleries. And now the Proverbial Challenge - a dream and a journey - one that I thought would happen when pigs fly. I'm currently headed back to University to study more art... this time sculpture. The journey is still very much alive! |
