What's Black and White and Red All Over?

By Sandra Starley

When I read about this challenge, I was thinking about my local guild challenge using black, white, and one other color, when I hot on the old riddle, "Whatâs black and white and red all over?" with the answer, "A newspaper." From that idea came a crossword puzzle with the words of the riddle and the challenge. I also liked the wordplay of puzzle and challenge.

It is also a tribute to my maternal grandfather, Noble Anderson, a newspaper editor from whome I inherited my love or words and the editor gene. "Progress" is for his newspaper, "The Progress," from our hometown of Fillmore, Utah. It also signifies the "proverbial challenges" of artistic endeavors: learning, growing and improving.

As a lawyer I manipulate language and as a quilter I manipulate fabric, so I had a great time doing this quilt. I used the red velvet overlay to carry the pun of "red all over" to a higher level. Under the word "solution" I beaded the riddleâs answer. I beaded fantasy quilting newspaper titles with double meanings: Sew Sew News and Needle Knows.

I hand quilted doodles and some of the fabric motifs into the black squares, similar to the doodling I do when I work on crossword puzzles. Viewers can look for hearts, starts and musical notes. They can also match the fabrics with their twins as all of the fabrics were used twice (with the exception of one). With the guild challenge, I was limited to three colors, but I took that as a dare and managed to use approximately 100 fabrics. The quilt was a true challenge and joy.
