As long as I can remember, I have been intrigued by art. It has remained a central theme in my studies. I grew up in Binghamton, NY and attended middle and high school in Whitney Point, NY. I graduated Valedictorian and received scholarships that enabled me to attend Lycoming College where I found a close-knit artistic community. I was extremely active in the art department working as gallery assistant, in the photography lab and assistant in the sculpture foundry. I also maintained the various art studios. I received the faculty award for achievement in fine art and graduated summa cum laude with a BA in art and certification in K-12 art education.
It was at Lycoming that I was first introduced to art quilts. We set up a show entitled "The Lucky Tomato Pincushion Project." Famous art quilters from all over the country showed work and I had the chance to meet and attend a lecture by Jane Burch Cochran, whose work had intrigued me most of all. It was such an eye opener for never before had I considered quilts to be works of art. Previously I had been interested in watercolor and photography, yet seeing these quilts gave me the idea that I could combine these interests using fiber to 'paint' images. Working more to my advantage are the multitudes of textiles, colors and patterns available. I feel they are screaming to be manipulated in some interesting way. Combining many small and seemingly unrelated pieces together to create a previously unforeseen image and the color relationships that result, truly fascinate me. The tactile aspect of the method and the intimate creative process satisfy me as well. I view many of my pieces as highly introverted in subject and theme, transforming tumultuous energy into singular, isolated visions. In this way, I hope to communicate the unspoken and evoke, above all, understanding.
