What Did Delaware?By Janie Mountain Baker

As a child, I tormented friends and family with frequent readings from a favorite book, "Jolly Jokes and Jungles for Boys and Girls." This delightful tome included many riddles and I learned that the best of these resulted in a snicker, laugh, or guffaw followed by a groan. I recall many favorites, but the state name riddles had always been at the top of the list, so my choice was the opener: What did Delaware?
Now, I have known a few women named Della. All were quite respectable and had brunette hair. With apologies to these ladies, when I hear the name Della, I picture an overblown, over-the-top saucy and sassy woman with well-teased, well-peroxided hair and a heart of gold. In hard boiled detective stories, sheās the woman our hero meets perched atop a barstool telling poorly worded alibis for her small-time huckster boyfriend. So hereās my Della. What did she wear? An artificial flower in her hair, an earring, sunglasses and a brooch? Oh, look, thereās a price tag attached to her dress. My Della would want you to know what her garment had cost, or would have cost without her five-finger discount. But wait, itās not the price on the tag, itās the answer to the riddle: Her New Jersey - groan! |
