Using vibrant fabrics to make art is very therapeutic and rewarding for me. Exploring new techniques and making my own designs have taken me to new and thrilling places.
I have been machine sewing since the age of nine, and I began doing hand needle work even before that. I made clothing all through school, taking high school clothing classes all four years; my prom dress and wool coat received top marks. During that time I participated in a McCallâs pattern competition, receiving an award for my original pattern for a stuffed elephant. I went on to study fashion design for one year at Fashion Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles. After my marriage in 1979, we moved to Sunland, CA, where there was a shop called Quilterâs Co-op. There started my quilting career - using colorful fabrics, cutting them up, only to sew them back together again. My love of puzzles extended into fabrics - quilts are a lot like puzzles, only much, much better! I began making many family quilts; using the old method of sending the blank squares to family members and having them personalize one and send it back to me. I would then assemble them and give them as gifts. My first family quilt was for my grandmaâs birthday. From there, I expanded my horizon by designing my own squares and making a wide variety of quilts and hand quilting in my grandmotherâs frame. About this time, the Glendale Quilt Guild was forming and I became a charter member. Over the years I have joined many other groups and guilds in the quilting world. I have held many positions in my local guild and met many wonderful textile artists. I have enjoyed showing my quilting and textile art in many shows and competitions, since the early 80âs. In recent years my interests have shifted to the creative-artistic side of the textile arts. My current direction is to use more three-dimensional elements in my pieces.
