Ruta Butkus Marino

Food is serious business in my husbandâs family. The Marinoâs have retailed fancy foods for more than fifty years, and for the last twenty odd years, I have worked in the family store. I made several food quilts to hang in the store, fairly early on in my quilting career. In the last several years I have used a collage method of appliquŽ to play with my food - combining food images with sayings about food to humorous effect.

In my work I like to express my logical and practical side as well as the side that enjoys playing with words and ideas - especially exaggerated literalism. Being an art historian and art librarian by profession has helped me find inspiration in all manner of art across the ages. Some of my food quilts recognize the work of Giuseppe Archimboldo (1527-1593) who created portraits of people using likenesses of food and other everyday objects.
