What do we plant when we plant the tree? We plant the ship which will cross the sea. We plant the mast to carry the sails; We plant the planks to withstand the gales - The keel, the keelson, and beam and knee; We plant the ship when we plant the tree. - Henry Abbey My grandmother taught me rhyming riddles that stayed in my head long after the game was over. This little riddle has the same annoying sing-songy cadence - the "Cat in the Hat" cadence of another era. Adapted from a block designed by Dinah Jeffries. I have lived on the banks of Lake Michigan for 30 years and in recent years I have become a Master Gardener in Florida, so my love for land and sea has merged and is expressed in this little work. The interconnectedness of our waters and lands are evidenced in so many ways and the playfulness of this riddle points to this. |
