Why Did the Rooster Cross the Road?

By Sandy Harper

To get to the hen house of course! I liked the idea of putting a twist on the original riddle, not to mention the thought of a strutting rooster and curvaceous hens made me laugh. As my thoughts progressed on the design, I began to picture the rooster strutting across the road in anticipation of what lay ahead. In order to convey what lay ahead, I used the Trapunto technique to enhance the "voluptuousness" of the hens.

The actual artwork I used to design the rooster and hens was a collaboration effort. I was having trouble getting the look I wanted, so I asked Jennifer Mason, a friend of my daughterâs, who loves to draw, if she would help me. I shared my concept, layout, and the direction I wanted my quilt to go. Jennifer and I tossed ideas around and she did some preliminary drawings. We rejected an oriental hen and a belly dancing hen in favor of the western rooster and hens theme. The finished rooster and hens are incredibly accurate to the original drawings, a fact with which that I am extremely pleased.

I would like to thank Jennifer Mason for sharing her artistic talent with me.
