What Can Run But Never Walk?

By Suzanne Weeks

This quilt is an interpretive representation titled Old Man River, answering the riddle, "What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, has a bed but never sleeps?"

I was challenged to create a contemporary quilt art using my skills as a crazy quilt artisan. I am especially drawn to the element of water both in nature and in my creations. Typically, crazy quilting uses embroidered motifs stitched within pieced patches, depicting a story or theme. I chose to create a crazy quilt that should be viewed as a whole and the motifs adding to the general theme, thus building onto the pieced foundation. The motifs include a lily patch with playful frogs and dragonflies; a blue heron waiting patiently for a school of fish; river rocks along the shoreline with gently flowing water; cat-tails, flowers and grasses embellishing the fan shaped land area. The border adds to the water theme with tambour work and beaded fringe representing a sense of flowing water.
