I am a newcomer to the world of art quilts, but not to the disciplines of art or of sewing. I can hardly remember when I was not making something with fabric, whether I was making my own clothing, creating costumes for theatrical productions, or decorating my surroundings. Study and enjoyment of visual art has also been a constant - in fact, in my teens I was awarded two summer art camp scholarships and my high school art teacher had strongly encouraged me to pursue it as my major (I got my degrees in Īpracticalā professions instead).
Now that I have reached mid-life and have a modest amount of financial security, I have given myself permission to pursue my long-deferred passions. I began seriously making quilts in 2000, and by 2002 I felt confident enough to send in my first juried quilt show entry, which was accepted. After working in 2003 to expand my piecing skills, I set a goal for myself to enter at least three quilt shows or contests for 2004. As of June ā04 I have entered three national-level juried events and been accepted for all of them. Iām taking this as general encouragement from the world to continue on my current path. I couldnāt be happier! Thereās such a long and interesting road ahead, starting with my first seminar (with Ruth McDowell) this summer.
