Variety is the Spice of Life!By Sandy Harper

Originally I had a sketch for "Donít Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth" but I tossed it because there was not much room for creativity. So, not having come up with any other proverbs I went on-line. I spent hours going through lists of proverbs, jotting them down and making thumbnail sketches. Finally, I settled on two: "Dead Men Tell No Tales" and "Variety is the Spice of Life." I did a drawing of each, but when my family failed to figure out "Dead Men..." I decided to go with "Variety. I did a couple of different drawings for the proverb, and while they worked, they werenít quite right. So, I went to the drafting table, taped graph paper together to get the right size, and hoped for the best.
Flipping through some junk mail I found a design on a card that inspired the borders. I crazy quilted the background in neutrals so as not to over power anything else. Using a font from the computer as a stencil for the lettering, I appliquÈd the proverb right on top. Then I added a mix of fabrics, buttons, beads, ribbon and various techniques to bring it all together. On the back I wrote a variety of things that make life spicy. This is the first quilt that I designed myself - it was a challenge and I am very happy with the results. |
