Babette Grunwald

When I moved to the States 10 years ago I thought I should do something very American and took a quilting class.I started by making traditional quilts, but soon turned my efforts towards contemporary Art quilts. I've always been very influenced and inspired by the environment around me. Living in Central Mexico for 4 years helped me use color in a non-inhibited way, freely and stunningly, using colors together that before my experience in Mexico I would never have used. I've painted on cotton to make realistic scenes of Southern France, Switzerland and Mexico. More recently I have been working with small scraps, using a collage technique, making my quilts look like abstract paintings. The scraps are the brush strokes a painter might use. I enhance the design by machine quilting heavily my wall-hangings with free-motion quilting by machine. In 2001, I moved to Prosser, Washington, the heart of this State's wine country and again the environment inspired me to start two new series of art quilts: one series depicts the contrast and tension between agriculture and the native ecosystem of Eastern Washington. The other series depicts grapes and my old love for agriculture and viticulture (I have a masters in agricultural sciences and plant science and did my research on grapes).

I have exhibited my quilts in regional, national and international quilt exhibits. I have taught quilting for the past 5 years.I have sold my quilts in Switzerland, France, Mexico, Venezuela and the United States.
