Back in 1995 I had the good fortune to see an article in Smithsonian Magazine about a collection of art quilts depicting playing cards - the Full Deck Art Quilts. The article inspired me to find out where the quilts were being shown and ultimately I got on a plane to see them.
After seeing Full Deck, I had an idea for another challenge - one based in proverbs and sayings. I have long been fascinated by the interplay of language and heritage in the sayings that are passed down our family trees. Both of my grandmothers used to say the darnedest things, and through their words, that I have shared with my family and friends, my grandmothers' legacies live on. Thus I created a new challenge, one I hope shows off the talents of today's quilt artists to the public. This collection of quilts depicts proverbs, wives' tales and things these artists' grandmothers (and other family members) said. I see each work as an interactive experience for the viewer, as she or he looks at the quilt and tries to determine the saying or proverb. I also hope that the collection will expose some non-quilters to the wonderful world of artistic quilts and their makers, as they honor the heritage of our language and ancestors. As the viewer, I would like to challenge you to read the stories that go with each quilt. You will find some wonderful tales of laughter, joy, inspiration, struggle, pride and honor behind these beautiful works of art.
